Don McCabe, the author of To Teach a Dyslexic, The Patterns of English Spelling and over 30 other books will be presenting a seminar Oct 17-18-19 on how to use AVKO materials and techniques. Those who attend will receive certification as an AVKO tutor.

Friday’s Program

3:30-4:00 Registration

4:00-4:05 Welcome, overview, and introduction by Susan Myshka.

4:05-4:10 Collection of written questions that the prospective tutors and/or tutor trainers would like to have answered. A volunteer will write them on an easel during the first break.

4:10-4:20 Classic definitions of dyslexia translated into plain English.

4:20-4:30 Fonnix Ken Bea Phun Pre-Test.

4:30-4:45 BREAKTIME.

4:45-5:00 Logic and dyslexics. Why teaching LEFT to RIGHT is WRONG! AVKO’S TRAINER RULE #1: How a word sounds at its beginning depends upon its ending!” So, NEVER say, “Sound it out!”

5:00-5:15 The linguistic concept of Sandhi or synaloepha extremely important but never taught in the colleges of education or even recognized by the IRA & IDA.

Saturday’s Program

10:00-10:15 Basic Tutoring Techniques. We start on time. We don’t believe in punishing people who are on time by making them wait for the chronically late.

10:15-10:30 The handwriting connection to reading.

10:30-10:45 Sequential Spelling demonstration with dyslexic students.

10:45-11:00 Almost Open Question and Answer period.  Questions that were submitted earlier will not be addressed at this time because they most likely will be answered later on.  This period is for new questions as the result of what has already been presented

11:00-11:15 BREAK

11:15-11:30 A Comprehension Test for Good Readers Who Know the Importance of Context Clues. 

11:30-11:45 AVKO RULE #3: THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A WILD GUESS.

11:45-12:00 Complete Use I Before E Rule.

2:00-2:15 Sequential Spelling:  How to create your own.  Everybody will make their own individual two week sequence for a student of theirs.

2:15-2:30 Using The Patterns of English Spelling as a resource tool.

2: 30-2:45 VOCABULARY DEVELOPMENT, traditional methods plus AVKO methods

2:45-3:00 BREAK

3:00-3:15 HOLDER OF THE FOLDER, p. 360.  Participants will need to bring one file folder, one old American magazine, and a yellow highlighter

3:15-3:30 Training of Parents to help in the tutoring

3:30-3:45 Readings for Fluency.  Using a computer to make your own

3:45-4:00 BREAK

4:00-4:15 READING SPEED, FLUENCY, AND COMPREHENSION

4:15-4:30 The Case of the Invisible Y,

4:30-4:45 The Mind/Body Connection.  Body language and the power of suggestion

4:45 -5:00 BREAK

5:00-5:15 Using the Reading Teacher’s List of Over 5,000 Basic Words and Individualized Spelling

5:15-5:30 Questions that were submitted at the beginning of the first session
